Welcome to 7th grade Social Studies at Twality Middle School! I sincerely look forward to working with you and your sons and daughters this year.
Course Objectives
In Social Studies class will be studying history and geography of the Eastern Hemisphere. We will focus on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) that have been adopted by the state of Oregon and 44 other states. In addition to this, we will also be studying content-specific vocabulary and academic language.
Classroom Behavioral Expectations
Safe, respectful, and responsible is the behavior guideline at Twality, and I follow the same guideline in my classroom.
Be safe: Act in a manner that does not cause harm (physical or emotional) to others.
Be respectful: Respect the rights and needs of others, and the property of peers and the school.
Be responsible: Take responsibility for your own learning, and come to class prepared.
We will be using school-provided iPads this year for assignments, research, and communication. Each student will be assigned an iPad to use, and they will be responsible for the care and respectful use of it.
Materials
Please bring the following to school each day:
Sharpened pencils (at least 2)
A spiral-bound notebook for Social Studies content (70 pages preferred)
1 pack of yellow sticky notes (we will use several over the course of the year)
Grading
88-100% = A / 4 = exceeds proficiency
63-87% = B / 3 = meets proficiency
38-62% = C / 2 = approaching proficiency
13-37% = D / 1 = developing
Less than 13% = incomplete
Additional time to turn in assignments will be given to students with excused absences. Students otherwise turning in work late may have points subtracted from their completed assignment grade.
Daily Class Work / Homework
Each student will organize their classwork and homework in their school binders. Classwork and homework will be scored for completeness and proficiency. For most assignments, students that use their class time wisely will have minimal homework.
Attendance
Regular attendance is required. When a student misses class, they lose valuable class time participating, working with peers, asking questions, and understanding assignments. It is impossible to make this up after an absence, so it is important to get to class each day.
Students are not penalized for work missed due to an excused absence – students receive one make up day for each excused day missed. When a student is absent and needs make up work, it is the student’s responsibility to make up missed assignments. Students should make arrangements before school, during RV, or after school. For extended absences consisting of 3 or more days, parents are able to request homework from the school.
The school policy on absences: “According to ORS 339.965, excused absences include: personal illness, family illness and business, emergencies, funerals, suspensions. Absences for reasons which do NOT fall into the above categories will be unexcused.”
Communication
Students: Please communicate with me before parents need to get involved. If there is an issue, you and I should be able to resolve it with a quick conversation. This is an important skill to learn before stakes become higher in high school.
Parents: If you need to contact me, e-mail communication is best. I will return any phone calls I receive after school.
If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out.
Best,
Ron Bullard
